Popular reviewed lists

We're working through every list this year: our own write-up of each firm, checked Google ratings, and local information like court fees and free legal help. Here are some of the most used.

How our lists work

Top 10 Lawyers started in 2018 for a simple reason: finding a lawyer usually means ringing around firms you know nothing about. We put the options for each city and area of law on one page so you can compare them first.

When we put a firm on a list we look at whether it actually does that kind of work in that city, how long it has been doing it, whether its lawyers hold specialist accreditation, what clients say in public reviews and how easy it is to reach.

Some firms pay for a featured listing and that affects where they appear. We say so on every list rather than hide it.

Before you call a lawyer

  • Write down the key dates. When things happened, any court dates, and any deadline in a letter you've received.
  • Gather your paperwork. Charge sheets, contracts, emails, medical reports or whatever relates to the matter.
  • Ask about the first appointment. Whether it's free or fixed price, how long it runs and who you'll be speaking with.
  • Ask how fees work. Hourly, fixed fee or no win no fee, and what you'd pay if the matter goes further than expected.
  • Check free help too. Your state's legal aid commission and community legal centres give free advice to people who qualify.

Common questions

Is Top 10 Lawyers free to use?

Yes. Browsing the lists and sending an enquiry costs you nothing, and you don't need to sign up. You deal with the law firm directly and agree any fees with them.

Do law firms pay to be listed?

Some do. Firms can pay for a featured listing, and that affects where they appear on a list. We say so on every page, so you can weigh that up.

How do you choose which firms go on a list?

We look at whether the firm actually does that type of work in that city, how long it has been doing it, whether any of its lawyers hold specialist accreditation, what clients say in public reviews and how easy the firm is to reach. Our how we rank page has the detail.

What is an accredited specialist?

A lawyer who has passed extra assessment in one area of law through their state's law society or legal practice board. It isn't required to practise, so plenty of very good lawyers aren't accredited, but it's a useful sign of depth in that area.

Can I get free legal help?

Often, yes. Each state and territory has a legal aid commission, and community legal centres give free advice to people who qualify. Many private firms also offer a free or fixed price first appointment, so ask when you call.

Are you a law firm?

No. Top 10 Lawyers is a directory. We don't give legal advice and nothing on this site should be read as advice about your situation.
