Top 10 Lawyers was started in 2018 by Steve, who works in online search and kept watching friends and family struggle to find a decent lawyer when they needed one in a hurry.
Finding a lawyer usually goes like this. You search, you get a page of ads and firm websites that all say the same things, and you end up ringing whoever answers first. When the matter is a criminal charge, a separation or an injury claim, that's a big decision to make on so little.
So we built a site that puts the options for each city and area of law on one page. Today we cover 119 lists across 20 Australian cities, from criminal and family law to construction and employment.
How the site is funded
We don't charge you anything to use the site. It's paid for by law firms. Some firms pay for a featured listing, and that affects where they appear on a list. We say so on every list, because you should know that when you're comparing firms.
What a featured listing doesn't buy is a write-up. Every firm on every list gets a description we write ourselves, based on what the firm actually does, its public reviews and details we can check. Paying firms don't supply or approve what we say about them.
How we put each list together
In 2026 we rewrote every list on the site from scratch. Each one now has our own write-up of every firm, Google ratings checked against each firm's own listing, specialist accreditations confirmed on the firm's site or the law society register, and local information like court fees, deadlines and where to get free help.
Before a list goes up, every legal statement on it goes through a separate fact check against the legislation and official sources, and we fix anything that's wrong or out of date. Each list shows the date it was last updated, and we recheck lists when the law changes.
